You Snakes! You Brood of Vipers!!”, By Femi Aribisala

The bus going from Lagos to Benin was waylaid by highway robbers. They got on the bus brandishing automatic weapons: “This is a stick up,” declared the leader of the gang in a menacing tone designed for maximum effect. “Is there anybody here who has been paying his tithes? If you have been paying your tithes raise your hands.”

A few passengers raised their hands sheepishly. He told those who did to move to one side. Then he declared: “Those of you who have not been paying your tithes are thieves and robbers. You have been robbing God. Therefore, we are going to rob you.” The robbers then carted away the money and valuables of those passengers who had not been paying their tithes.

Evangelical Thieves

You might not have heard this story before. But, in all probability, you might have heard a similar version of it. Different versions are common in the churches. Those who tell it insist it really happened. But every time you hear stories like this, know for a fact that it is a big fat lie. Only a thief would employ a thief to preach “the word of truth.” (James 1:18).

Consider this: a thief broke into a man’s house and held him at gunpoint. After collecting as much of his valuables as he could, he asked the house-owner a question on his departure: “Have you given your life to Christ?” The hapless house-owner replied in the negative. “I don’t believe in God,” he said.

The armed robber became concerned about the man’s salvation. So he sat back down and decided to have an extensive chat with him. For the next one hour, he preached to him as persuasively as he could, “the gospel of salvation.” Then he left with the man’s valuables.

Do you think the house-owner became a Christian? If he did, what kind of Christian do you suppose he became? What kind of righteousness can one expect to learn from a thief?

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.” (Matthew 23:15).

Tabernacle of Liars

If something is of God, it does not need to be promoted with lies. However, pastors don’t consider it a sin to tell lies in order to scare Christians into giving them their hard-earned money. Listen to one such fabrication coming from no less an eminent pastor than the former president of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Ayo Oritsejafor: “I know there are some people telling you not to pay tithe. Don’t listen to them. They want to kill you. You go die quick.”

This is nothing but witchcraft. I have paid no tithe in over 20 years. Nevertheless, I am still alive. Indeed, God has blessed me with good health.

Pastor Sam Adeyemi says: “Tithing helps us to secure God’s blessings.” Compare and contrast this piece of sophistry with Jesus’ statement: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3). Did Jesus forget to include in his beatitudes: “Blessed are the tithers for theirs is the kingdom of heaven?” Certainly not!

“Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit.” (Jude 1:11).

Money-changers

Tithe-collecting pastors preach more persistently about tithing than they do about anything else. Even salvation does not come anywhere near in their scale of insistence.

Adeyemi continues: “The way you are a citizen of a country and it is mandatory that you pay your taxes to ensure national prosperity, is the same way that, as a citizen of God’s kingdom, you pay your tithe.” So God’s kingdom will not prosper without tithes? Malarkey! Where is it written that tithes are for the promotion of the kingdom of God?

Jesus asked: “‘What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes – from their own sons or from others?’ ‘From others,’ Peter answered. ‘Then the sons are exempt,’ Jesus said to him.” (Matthew 17:25-26).

For his part, so-called Apostle Johnson Suleman tells his congregation: “The tithe I pay every Sunday is more than the tithe all of you pay for two Sundays. I pay tithe to ministries, I pay tithe to ministers. It’s a personal revelation.” Suleman should be well-advised that all liars end up in the lake of fire. (Revelation 21:8).

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices – mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law – justice, mercy and faithfulness.” (Matthew 23:23).

Fear-mongering

Pastor Enoch Adeboye says: “Please do not let anybody get you into trouble by attracting God’s curse to yourself, please pay your tithe.” This is fear-mongering. However, John says: “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment.” (1 John 4:18). Adeboye needs to take some bible lessons from Paul Adefarasin: “In this new covenant era, even if you don’t pay (tithe), there is no curse. There is no curse for the child of God in Christ. Only blessings.”

Bishop David Oyedepo is Adeboye’s partner-in-mischief. He says: “If you don’t pay tithe, you are permanently a beggar.” Poppycock! There is absolutely no scriptural basis for this kind of witchcraft. Nevertheless, the bishop is confident no one in his large congregation would dare contradict or challenge him. Indeed, Uche Maduagwu proclaims a dangerous article of faith: “Great pastors like Pastor Adeboye and Bishop Oyedepo cannot be wrong on tithe paying.”

They are not only wrong, they are deceitful.

Satanic Goodwill

Some “kindhearted” Christians have written to appeal to me to stop attacking pastors. They insist that I am undermining the Christian church and impeding the growth of the kingdom of God. What nonsense! Their concern reminds me of Peter who, out of the false goodness of his heart, would not have Jesus embrace the cross. This earned him a sharp rebuke: “Get behind me, Satan!” (Matthew 16:23).

Have you never heard? “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.” (Matthew 23:13-14).

Pastors don’t promote the kingdom of God. They promote the kingdom of pastors. Pastors are Jesus-killers. Instead of allowing men to follow Jesus, they present themselves as the Jesus of men’s lives.

The Church of God needs no human defence. Jesus says: “I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18). If the church can be scattered and the kingdom impeded, then it is eloquent testimony that it is not of God but of men.

“You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.” (Matthew 23:24). “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?” (Matthew 23:33). Your time of desolation is near. These are the days of vengeance. Your bogus kingdoms must fall.

LOVE

Loving what you do matters a lot,its the grease that keeps the friction silent and makes for smooth sail.
Loving what you do most again as to wanting to improve yourself on the job aspired to be the best and never want to be found wanting in any front.
It add zest to life and make life more meaningful and pleasant.
Without mincing words, love emboldens our life and our existence, shapes and moulds it,and without which we are fluid, nothingness, meaningless and what have you.

God is love,he has so fashioned our life and existence around love(Himself) that the worst we can do for ourselves is to want to or separate ourselves from love(Himself)

We are all a creative of love and created to love and as well to radiate and not to  repudiate it. We are to radiate it in its purest and finest form within and among ourselves. No wonder He said "love your neighbor as yourself" which He claimed to be the embodiment of all the laws.
Let's live in love, let's share love and let's keep doing love. He(JESUS) commanded it.

MONTHS FALSIFIED

When we refuse to partake in pagan festivals, we get labelled, called names and they see us as repugnant. I think that these festivals would one day become a thing of the past if people begin to reason for themselves not acting like programmed robots.

What crime have I committed for telling a Christian that Jesus Christ did not celebrate the New Year festival and I will not!!! Is it a sin to ask for evidences in the Bible to back up the celebration?

THESE ARE THE MONTHS APPROVED BY BIBLES.

1st month Of the Year, NISSAN. (esther 3v7)

2nd Month Of the Year, ZIV or ZIF. (1kinks 6v1 and 6v37).

3rd Month Of the Year, SIVAN. (esther 8v9).

4th Month Of the Year, ABIB (exodus 13v3-4).

5th Month Of The Year 5th month was not mentioned in d bible, but. the Hebrew call it ABU.

6th Month of the Year, ELUL (nehemiah 6v15).

7th Month Of the Year, ETHANIM (1kinks 8v2).

8th Month Of the Year, BUL or BUWL (1kinks 6v38).

9th Month Of the Year, KISLEV (nehemiah 1v1).

10th Month Of the Year, TEVET or TEVETH (esther 2v6).

11th Month Of the Year, SHEBAT. (zechariah 1v7).

12th Month Of the Year ADDAR or ADARU (esther 3v7 and 3v13, and 8v12).

It is saddening that Christians favoured Pope Gregory over God's wish.

HOW THE MONTHS GOT THEIR NAMES.

January- from the god, Janus

February - Romans festival of forgiveness of sins.

Mars - Roman god of War

April - Roman month Aprilis, perhaps derived from
aperire, (Latin to open, as in opening buds and
blossoms) or perhaps from Aphrodite, original Greek name of Venus.

May - Maia, Roman goddess, mother of Mercury by
Jupiter and daughter of Atlas

June - Juno, chief Roman goddess

July - Renamed for Julius Caesar in 44 BC, who was born
this month; Quintilis, Latin for fifth month, was the
former name (the Roman year began in March rather
than January)

August - Formerly Sextilis (sixth month in the Roman calendar); re-named in 8 BC for Augustus Caesar

September - September, (septem, Latin for 7) the seventh month in the Julian or Roman calendar, established in the reign of Julius Caesar

October - Eighth month (octo, Latin for 8) in the Julian (Roman) calendar. The Gregorian calendar instituted by
Pope Gregory XIII established January as the first month of the year.

November - Ninth Roman month (novem, Latin for 9).Catholic countries adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1582, skipping 10 days that October, correcting for too
many leap years

December : Julian (Roman) year's tenth month (decem,Latin for 10).

Christianity as a religion suffered and still suffering from the influence of Roman paganism and Western Immorality and immodesty.

Roman paganism taking away the true teachings of biblical prophets including Jesus replacing it with bloody sacrifice, God on cross, crucified avatar while Western immodesty and immorality giving Christians liberty to dress and mix how they want in contrast to the command of the Bible.

When people are drunk with the opium of falsehood mixed with elixir of lies served in a golden cup, the roughly dressed bitter nutritious truth becomes preposterous and the speaker of the truth, a Lunatic.

Of their arguments is that we should not bring religion into everything since they know it has no scriptural backing. If we are guilty of bringing religion into issues that are not religious, are they not super guilty for the special prayers, Tahajjud, praise and worship, Thanksgiving they organize? Why blame us for bringing religion into everything when in reality, they did not bring religion into it, they brought it into religion?

Tithe

And the debate continues.......

On Daddy Freeze and The Hoopla About Tithing.

By Reno Omokri

The recent todo on the issue of tithing which was sparked up by popular On Air Personality, Daddy Freeze (Freeze Coolfm), is actually a sad reflection of the state of Christianity in Nigeria specifically and the Black world in general.

Why? Because it proves that it is still true that if you want to hide anything from a Black man all you need to do is to put it in a book!

If all those who have opined about this matter had cared to read what The Holy Bible says about tithing, I am convinced that it would not have led to as big a controversy as it is today.

So many people have spoken for and against tithing and the thing that bothers me most about their interventions is that it references their pastor, a certain sermon, their opinion or something they have heard.

As a matter of fact, somebody commented that if only I read a certain book by David Yongi Cho, I would know that he (the commenter) was right in his opinion on tithing.

On the issue of tithing as well as on any other ecclesiastical issue, there is only one reference point and that is The Bible.

2nd Timothy 3:16 says:

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for DOCTRINE, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (KJV)

This pretty much covers it. Any controversy about tithing must be settled by The Bible.

The truth is that tithing as presently practiced by many churches, especially the so called Pentecostal or Evangelical churches, is unscriptural.

Take away tithing and the attraction and motivation to be the founder and president of an 'international ministry' would disappear.

The Bible actually warned us of such times as this in 1 Timothy 6:5-6.

Constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. But godliness with contentment is great gain. (NIV)

The truth is that tithing is an age old AGRICULTURAL practice that predated even Abraham and Moses. Ancient communities, including African communities, set aside a certain potion of their harvest (usually a tenth) and sacrificed it to their gods through his priests.

Now the tithing that Moses taught about was instituted by the living God because the Levitical priests were not given a portion of the land of Canaan as an inheritance and as a result they were to be supported by their fellow brethren.

Numbers 18:20-21 says:

The Lord said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them; I am your share and your inheritance among the Israelites.“ I give to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the tent of meeting. (NIV)

From the above it is clear that the tithes were specifically gifted by God to the Levites.

You will never find anywhere in Scripture were God, His Son Jesus or the early apostles and disciples asked the New Testament church to pay tithes to pastors.

Pastors do not replace Levites. In the New Testament, pastors worked and earned a living. They were not dependent on the church and the following verse proves it.

I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive."-Acts 20:33-35. (NIV).

The above was a farewell message from Paul who had pastored a church in Ephesus. I have been to Ephesus. I have been to the market where Paul had his tent making business.

Neither Jesus, nor Paul nor any of the fathers of the early church collected any tithes from their congregation because they were not Levites who were prevented from doing any type of work other than temple service.

Rather than tithing, the book of Acts teaches us in Acts 2:44-45 that the early Christians lived a communal life and shared EVERYTHING they had.

All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.

Too often, pastors try to manipulate their congregation by quoting Malachi 3:8-10

“Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole NATION—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. (NIV)

I want my readers to note the words 'NATION' in the Scripture above. Scripture must be used to unlock Scripture.

The above Scripture was directed to the NATION of Israel. This is clear from Malachi 3:6

"I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed" (NIV)

The reason God said the Israelites were robbing Him is because, as I have proved above with Scripture, on their way to the promised land, God made a deal with them that He would not give the Levites a share of the land of Canaan so that they could focus on Him and the work of the Temple.

In return the rest of the Israelites were to give God the tithes of their agricultural produce from the land He gave them and God in turn gave His tithes to the Levitical priesthood.

It is funny that pastors who insist that Malachi's verses on tithing must apply to them do not insist that other Old Testament provisions should also apply to them.

Deuteronomy 21:18-21 commanded the ancient Israelites to stone their stubborn children to death. Are tithe receiving pastors then prepared to stone their own stubborn children to death because of that Biblical verse?

Quoting an Old Testament verse to justify a New Testament life may appear hypocritical especially as Jesus, who is the author and finisher of our faith and His early disciples did not preach about tithing. Jesus talked about tithing only in passing while condemning the Pharisees. Pay your tithe if your conscience allows it, but don't use Malachi to justify it.

In the final analysis, I am not saying pay or don't pay tithes. I am just presenting the facts as an ordained pastor.

In fact, when the Pharisees insisted that the first Gentile converts to Christianity must be circumcised and keep the Mosaic Law, including tithing, the Council in Jerusalem overruled them and in Acts 15:19-20 gave only four commandments to the new Gentile believers and tithing was NOT one of those commandments.

Jesus mentioned tithe once (in passing when admonishing the Pharisees) but He preached salvation over 100 times.

Let our message in the church focus on Salvation not tithe! Abraham tithed. But He did not tithe to be blessed or that the devourer would be rebuked.

In fact, the tithing that Abraham tithed was completely different from the tithing God commanded the Israelites to do.

Abraham tithed from the goods he reclaimed from the kings he fought against. He did not tithe agricultural goods.

This is very clear from Hebrews 7:4

Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the PLUNDER! (NIV).

And one other thing that we should note is that Abraham paid tithes once. He did not pay tithes on multiple occasions to King Melchizedek. It was a one time specific event not a recurring weekly, biweekly, monthly or annual payment.

Are those pastors who insist on collecting monetary tithes aware that money existed during the times of the ancient Israelites, yet God never told them to pay monetary tithes. He only requested for AGRICULTURAL tithes so the Levites who had no farms could eat.

As a matter of fact, God told those Israelites who lived far away from the Temple not to even bother paying their agricultural tithes but to convert it to money and spend it on themselves.

We see this in Deuteronomy 14:24-27:

But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the Lord your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the Lord will choose to put his Name is so far away), then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice. And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own.

Yes, Abraham tithed from his military victory but it does not mean that you must also tithe. Abraham had concubines. By the same logic, you should also have concubines.

The point I am trying to make is that the faith of Abraham culminates in Christ and under Christ, there is no compulsion to tithe. God has given each of us a conscience and His Spirit. If you are led to tithe then tithe. If you are not, then don't.

But let him that tithes not look down on him that does not tithe and let him who does not tithe not hold those who do in contempt. Your salvation is dependent on your faith in Christ Jesus and not whether or not you tithe. ‪You can make heaven if you believe but don't tithe but not if you tithe and don't believe.

As a New Testament believer, what is required of you is a willing offering not a compulsory tithe. This is why 2 Corinthians 9:7 says:

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

We ought to understand that the biblical practice of tithing had two origins. The first was from Abraham, the prophet and patriarch and the other is the Mosaic Law.

In Christ, both the tithing by the prophet and the law have been fulfilled hence in Matthew 5:17 Jesus said:

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."

So because of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection, we do not need the Levitical priesthood as go betweens us and God since Jesus is "The Way, The Truth, and The Life." (John 14:6)

In the same way, we do not need Abraham's blessings since God has blessed us "with every spiritual blessing in Christ." (Ephesians 1:3).

As a matter of fact, Colossians 2:10 teaches us that 'we are complete in Christ'.

So don't let any pastor psyche you into believing that your worship of God is not complete until you have paid your tithe.

Cancer fable

The word called cancer is a lie…You might not believe this but cancer is not a disease; it is a business.Cancer consists of only a deficiency of vitamin B17. It is nothing else.Cancer has become widespread; it has affected the old, young, baby and everyone.Sharing this wonderful post will expose many of the hidden hands of the world’s manipulators and annoy them.
Do you know that the book “World Without Cancer” has up till now been prevented from being translated into many world languages?
Know this: there is no disease called cancer. Cancer consists of only a deficiency of vitamin B17. It is nothing else.
Avoid chemotherapy, surgery and or taking medicines with strong side effects.
You would recall that in the past, quite a large number of seamen lost their life to a named disease (scurvy); a disease that took the life of numerous people as well. And a number of people got an enormous income from it. Afterwards, it was discovered that scurvy was just a deficiency of vitamin C. That means it wasn’t a disease (illness).

Cancer is also just like that! The colonizing world and the enemies of humanity established the cancer industry and made it into a business. from which they earn billions in income.

The cancer industry flourished after world war II. To fight cancer, all these delays, details and enormous expenditures are not needed. They only go to line the pockets of colonizers, especially since the cure for the condition was found long ago.

The prevention and cure of cancer will be obtained simply through the following strategies:

Those who have cancer should first try to know what cancer is. Do not panic! You should investigate the condition.

Nowadays does anyone die of an illness called scurvy? No. Because it gets cured.

Since cancer is only a deficiency of vitamin B17, eating 15 to 20 pieces of apricot stone/nucleus (fruit stone) everyday is enough.

Eat wheat bud (wheat sprouts). Wheat bud is a miraculous anti-cancer medicine. It is a rich source of liquid oxygen and the strongest anti-cancer matter named laetrile. This matter is present in the fruit stone of apple and is the extracted form of vitamin B17 (Amygdalin).

The American medicinal industry has started implementing the law forbidding laetrile production. This medicine is being manufactured in Mexico and gets smuggled into USA.

Dr. Harold W. Manner, in a book named “Death of Cancer” has stated that the success of cancer treatment with laetrile is as high as above 90%.

Sources of Amygdalin (Vitamin B17)

The foods containing vitamin B17 include the following:

-The fruit stone or grain(seed) of fruits. This contains the highest amount of vitamin B17 in nature. This includes fruit stone of apple, apricot, peach, pear, and prune (dried plum).

-Common beans, corns(grains), which include bean, lentil sprout (lentil bud) Lima (Lima beans) and pea.

-Kernels: Bitter Almond (Richest source of vitamin B-17 in nature) and Indian almond.

-Mulberries: almost all mulberries such as black mulberry, blueberry, raspberry and strawberry.

-Seeds (Grains): sesame and linseed (seed of linen/flax seed).

-Groats of oats, barley, brown rice, groats of block wheat, linseed, millet and rye.

This vitamin is found in grains and fruit stones of apricot, brewer’s yeast, rough rice (paddy) and sweetmeat pumpkin.

List of Anti-Cancer Foods
•Apricots (kernels/seeds)
•seeds from other fruits like apples, cherries, peaches, prunes, plums, pears
•Lima beans
•Fava beans
•Wheatgrass
•Almonds
•Raspberries
•Elderberries
•Strawberries
•Blackberries
•Blueberries
•Buckwheat
•Sorghum
•Barley
•Millet
•Cashews
•Macadamia nuts
•Bean sprouts
All are the highest sources of absorbable vitamin B17.

Ingesting dish washing liquids (used in the kitchen) and hand washing liquid (used in the restroom) is the main cancer causing factor so your eating of them should be restricted. You will surely say that we do not eat them!
However, you daily wash your hands with hand washing liquid and wash your plates with dish washing liquid. The liquid is absorbed and will not leave the plate with washing. When cooking or eating food, the soap in the plate or dish gets attached to the hot food and so we end up eating the dish washing liquid with our food. Even if you rinse the plate hundreds of times, that will be of no use.

But the solution is to pour half of the dishwashing liquid and hand washing liquid and top it up with vinegar.
It is as simple as that.Do not eat blood cancer causing agents and also save your family from this danger.Similarly, seriously desist from washing vegetables with even a few drops of dishwashing liquid because irrespective of how much you would rinse them, the chemicals would have already entered the tissues of the vegetable and will not get rinsed away.Instead, soak fruits and vegetables with salt and then rinse with water. And to keep them fresh, add vinegar.

Please share this post with others so they can also benefit from the information.

Ushering by P.H. LONG

The purpose of ushering in church is not merely to serve people, as in a theater or restaurant. Its purpose is to serve God. When the ushers see to it that an atmosphere of reverence and order is maintained before, during, and after the service, they do it for God. When they usher the worshippers to their seats, they do it for God. When they gather the offerings, they serve God. What they do, they do not "as unto men, but unto God." They are a part of the total congregation which presents itself before God to worship Him.
Some Do's and Don'ts
DON'T Regard ushering in church as a mere mechanical necessity to direct people to their pews, or a social function which church custom considers desirable. The whole congregation, and particularly the ushers, must have the right mental attitude for the work of ushering. Otherwise it loses its sacred character and will not accomplish its real purpose. No one should be allowed to usher who is proud, overly self-conscious, desirous of making himself known and prominent, wants to show authority, thinks he is doing others a favor, or has the idea that it is a job someone has to do, and since no one else is willing to do it, it's up to him to carry it out. All ushers must have the right mental attitude. Their motto must be, "We serve the Lord Christ."
DO Recognize the importance of church ushering. Next to the minister, the organist, and choir,-the ushers have the most important task to perform in the worship service. It is up to the ushers to keep order, to help create a spirit of worship, reverence, and friendliness in and about the church. These things are absolutely necessary. Without them the church service cannot be held. Furthermore, ushering is an important factor in the church's public relations. The ushers are the representatives of the church to the people who come to worship there. Visitors receive their first impression of the church from the ushers. And that impression may be the deciding factor in making a visitor a regular worshipper, or of causing him to go elsewhere of winning or losing a soul to Christ and the church.
When the importance of ushering is realized, it will also help solve the problem of getting people to do the work of ushering. People like to do things that are important. That is a challenge. It will not be difficult to find and train a group of men for this work, if they are convinced that they are performing a valuable and important service. Therefore, emphasize the fact that ushering is a great privilege and a sacred duty; emphasize the importance of ushering.
Note! While ushering is important, and its importance must be emphasized, the ushers themselves must not have or convey a feeling of personal importance and pride. Let him memorize and apply the Third Beatitude, "Blessed are the meek." Let him learn of our Lord to be "meek and lowly in heart." He is a servant of God. His work is important is its relationship to God and the worship of God, but personally he must not feel proud and important.
D) Have regular meetings of the ushers for the purpose of instruction, interchange of ideas, suggestions, and discussion of experiences and problems. In some churches the ushers meet for fifteen minutes before every worship service. For example, if the service begins at 11 a.m., the ushers' meeting is from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. This meeting is opened with prayer, after which some phase of ushering is discussed, and a final check-up is made for the ushering in the coming service. The advantage of this type of meeting is that it helps get the ushers to church on time and prepares them properly for their work. The disadvantage is that the time is too short to conduct a course on ushering. But whatever the arrangement, some provision ought to be made for the training of the ushers. They must know what to do, how to do it, and when to do their work.
DON'T Let anyone usher who does not attend the training meetings, at least no one who has not been instructed. Ushers should understand that they cannot do their important work properly without attending the ushers' meetings, any more than the members of the choir and of the Sunday school staff can do their work without attending choir rehearsals and Sunday school teachers' training courses. Furthermore, do not fail to impress upon the ushers again and again that they must be at their posts at least fifteen minutes before the time of service. They are acting as hosts for God. When the people come (and we want them to come early rather than late), the ushers must be there as good hosts, to greet them and take care of their needs.
DO Seat the worshippers as much as possible where they want to sit. Ushers should study the congregation, learn the favorite places of the members, especially those that are hard of hearing, the near-sighted, the mothers with babies, and those who are ill. Visitors and people who come early are entitled to the best seats, if they want them. But no one ought to insist on his rights contrary to the law of Chris tian charity. Parents with small children should be seated in the rear, so that they will not disturb the whole congregation if they have to leave, and will feel they can go out without difficulty in case of necessity. For this reason it is well to rope off the rear pews for them. In churches which are ordinarily only half filled it is wise to distribute the people in various parts of the nave. This will give the appearance of a well-filled church, even if it is only half full. Besides, the empty seats can always be filled later, if happily more come than were expected. It is also important to get the front pews filled as early as possible. That is the secret of getting the people to the front. If you allow the rear and center of the nave to be filled first, it will be very difficult to persuade anyone to sit in the front. The reason for this is psycho logical. It creates the impression that the front pews are undesirable, since others have avoided them. It also makes some people self-conscious. Their timid natures rebel against the idea of going down the aisle past a lot of other people. It fills them with fear.
In large churches it might be well to have ushers stationed at various sections of pews, and to direct the people from one usher to another. That will do away with a lot of parading around by the ushers. The less of that you have, the better. And during the service these ushers sit in their sections, where they will become a part of the worshipping congregation, and will be able to serve the needs of the people assigned to them.
DON'T Place children together in one pew, unless they are accompanied by their parents, or are with other older people. Don't try to force anyone to sit where he does not want to sit. Ushers must not express surprise or resentment if anyone does not follow to the place where they want to seat him. They must try to act as though nothing unusual had happened, return to such a person, and kindly give him a bulletin. No matter how provoking a situation may be, the ushers should always graciously give in to the wishes of the worshippers. If a reserved section is involved, simply state that it is reserved, and suggest another place. Don't argue. Don't let anyone know that he is in the wrong. Ushers should always know where the empty places are, and never hunt for seats. They should never run after anyone down the aisle.
DO Give everyone a church bulletin with the directions for the service of the day. It is better to give such materials to the people in seating them, than it is to distribute them at the door. If the usher holds them in his hand until he has led the worshipper to his seat, and then gives him the bulletin, it will help solve the problem of getting the worshipper to follow him. The same thing is true of hymnals, if they are distributed by the ushers. Some find it more convenient to have hymnals in pew-racks on the back of all pews. The number of hymnals must be sufficient, of course, for all worshippers. It may be desirable" to give out the hymnals to latecomers. This will make it possible for the ushers to point out to them the particular place in the service that has been reached.
DON'T be indifferent to the needs of the worshippers. They should not be unconcerned when they see that someone does not have a hymnal, or a stranger does not know where to find the order of service. They should not fail to give those a bulletin who came in and seated themselves without the assistance of an usher.
DO Be tactful with latecomers who want to be seated at once, even though the service is at a point in which no one should be ushered into church. A little study on the temperament of such people will enable the ushers to deal with them without causing resentment. They may hand them an open hymnal, showing them the place in the service which is in progress, and pointing out to them the next part of the service during which they can enter. If possible, temporary seats should be provided in the narthex for those who must be detained during the non-entrance periods.
DON'T Welcome people when they come to church with any backslapping expressions, or any advances beyond a quiet "Good morning" (evening), or "Good morning, Mr. Jones." ...
DO Conduct your work in a dignified and reverent manner. Ushers should be dressed neatly and appropriately for the worship of God. They should be courteous, pleasant, and kind. They should always "be on the job. When their duties require them to be on their feet, they should be erect and tending to business. When they do not have to be up, they should be seated so as to be absorbed in the congregation and actively engaged in worship.
DON'T There is no excuse for ushers dressed in a light golf suit, white shoes, and a loud necktie. They should not appear at a morning service wearing a wing collar and bow tie, which belong to evening dress. They should never enter into lengthy conversations among themselves or with other people. They should not speak in a loud voice. They should not lean against pews or the walls of the church. They should not walk around during the service, or leave the church, unless it is absolutely necessary in the performance of duty. And the time to adjust the heating system, to regulate the ventilation, to open and close windows is fifteen minutes, at least, before the time of service; not during worship, except in an emergency.
DO In taking the offerings, the ushers should know and keep their place. They should remember that this is a part of the worship service. They should have an arrangement with the organist, so that he can bring the music to a proper conclusion as soon as the gathering of the offerings is finished.
DON'T If the ushers go to the chancel before the gathering of the gifts and again when the offerings are brought to the altar, they should not goose-step and march in military precision. This is no parade. Nothing beyond good order is required. No tramping of feet, no snappy timing, or precise turning add to the spirit of worship and reverence.
Ushers' Motto
"Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ." Col. 3: 23, 24.
